career compromise?

I had the worst conversation with a recruiter for a hiring agency this afternoon. An impromptu phone interview turned in to an interrogation. First she implied that all young people tend to pad their resumes and I must be one of them. After assuming my resume was fake she asked me to explain each job, campus organization and reference in detail. There was little interest in what I learned from these experiences, just that I did have them.

The worst question she asked was this one: ''I see you helped make a documentary on Hurricane Katrina, did you make this in Iowa or did you actually travel somewhere?''

My reply was snotty but justifiable: ''Well Hurricane Katrina didn't happen in Iowa, so yes, we traveled to New Orleans and sent for footage from Mississippi, Florida, Tennessee and cities outside of New Orleans, Louisiana. If you would like a copy I can help you purchase one.''

Ugh, it went further downhill after being told that my broad field of choice- communications- is ''probably a bit too narrow for them'' but they would love to have me interview. Oh goody, I can not wait to interview with you in person!

In related news, CNN and Career Building published an article today suggesting jobs college grads should go after. This is probably what gave Ms. Recruiter the idea that communication experiences are unnecessary.
